Jawaharlal Nehru University Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) opened its doors in the early 1970s. The university strikes an excellent student-teacher ratio and has an innovative mode of instruction. For these characteristics, JNU has earned a reputation as one of the leading universities in India. JNU focuses especially on postgraduate education. Jawaharlal Nehru University FoodApart from its contribution to the Global Studies Programme, the Centre for the Study of Social Systems (CSSS) conducts researches on social change, social movements, sociology of knowledge, religion and agrarian relations, gender studies, and studies on diaspora and on marginal groups. The Centre has been declared by the UGC to be a Centre of 'Excellence'. In addition, three Science Schools – the School of Physical Sciences, the School of Life Sciences and the School of Environmental Sciences – have also received UGC recognition as Centers of Excellence.
